Wood Tea Set

I have a set of chester drawers…?
They are really really really old, and they’ve been damaged so much…The drawers themselves are fine, but on top of them where I tend to put all sorts on, like my lamp, and TV etcthey have been burned and scratched and dinted and I was just wondering if there was any chance of being able to repaire them. I think they are pine. They are dry, and not varnished. I havnt got enough money to get them repaired by a proffesional, but I saw once, on “how clean is your house” a woman had the same problem and she sanded them down until the dints and scratches had all gone and then she got tea and wiped it on the chester drawers and it made them look good as new, but hers were a very dark brown wood colour, so i dont know if the same thing would work on mine? has anyone got any ideas on what I can do to repaire the wood myself. It doesnt necessarlity have to look good as new, but they just look awful at the moment…plz help!!!

Your first step is indeed to sand it down and make it smooth. If the chest-of-drawers is as old as you think, it should be made from solid wood. But, just to be sure, look at the back of the furniture piece and look closely at the top (from the back). If it has veneer on top, you’ll be able to see a difference between the layers on the top. You’ll see a line or a difference of material or something like that. This is important, because if the scratches or dents on top are too deep, you may sand trhough any veneer before you reach a smooth top. If it’s solid wood, it should be okay, unless you have really, really deep scratches that would result in the top becoming very thin. I think you’ll be able to tell what you’ll need to do.
Secondly, you need to try and match the color of the wood. Normally, furniture manufacturers stain their furniture some color, if for no other reason than to get a uniform looking finish. Pine is a wood commonly used in furniture building, but it stains poorly in that it becomes splotchy or different hues due to the softness of the wood (that’s one reason I don’t recommend using tea in this situation).
To determine what type of stain to use, you could go to an hardware store and look at the different colors of stain and find the one that matches your piece. Pine is a common stain and should be readily available. Some places, like paint stores, even have color cards that allow you to take home some cards and compare the color of your chest-of-drawers to the cards to find a perfect match. Once you determine the right stain, just follow the directions and apply it. Unless you want to add a sealer or finish such as shellac or polyurethane, you’re pretty much done once the stain dries.
Again, I would not recommend using tea, because if your dresser is pine, the tea will stain, but won’t match your color. Both tea and coffee can be used as stain, but when they don’t match the current color of the piece of furniture, it doesn’t look quite so nice.
(I personally would suggest using some sort of finish after the stain has dried, if for no other reason, to protect the top from further damage). Unprotected wood that has been stained is more susceptible to discoloration from a host of causes: Spilling other liquids, scratching caused by putting heavy object on top, even esposure to sunlight will affect it. Applying a finish, such as polyurthane is really quite easy. I’d get a can of it in spray form. Then, just lightly spray the top after the stain has completely dried. If you follow the instructions on the spray can, it will turn out pretty nice. Just don’t spray too closely, etc.
