Has anyone read, “White Teacher” by Vivian G. Paley.?

Its about a white teacher who enjoyed working in an urban setting with mixed children. I need some input from other readers so I can start the paper. What did you get out of this book and her technique? I found it boring and a 4 pg paper is due…help!

I had to read it as a Master’s of Education student. Like you, I didn’t enjoy it quite as much as when I read the book. However, now that I am the “white teacher,” a lot of it rings true….to provide you with a specific example is difficult because it’s been 5 years….but I think that what I would get out of it now is that sometimes the people that you feel you have nothing in common with can end up teaching you the most life lessons (both teachers and students)…..I will have to revisit the book, and then hopefully I can help you more!

Good luck though!

However thick-skinned or immune to such assaults we may become as adults, the memory of those early exclusions is as palpable to each of us today as it is common to human experience. We remember the uncertainty of separating from our home and entering school as strangers and, more than the relief of making fr…

“All these white schools I’ve been sent to are racist,” Sonya says. “I’d have done better in a black school. I was an outsider here.” These are hard words for Vivian Paley, whose own kindergarten was one of Sonya’s schools, the integrated classroom so lovingly and hopefully depicted by Paley in White Teacher. Confronted with the grown-up Sonya, now on her way to a black college, and with a choru…
