How can I stop my 6 year old, 15’3 TB from being bargy, strong and rude?!?
This week my parents bought me a 6 year old, 15’3 TB as a present, as delighted as i am, she can be very strong and bargy, especially at tea time, (i would push her back put have little weight behind me), she does listen to voice commands and will move back when i tell her too, yet soon as i come out of the tack room, she chases and barges me for her tea. Her previous owners told me to feed her 100% haylage, maybe she is very hungry? I am considering adding feed to her diet as she is going be worked from next week around 4 times a week doing light to medium school work and hacking etc. She is my first horse and I’m still building up my confidence and would hate to have to sell her because of her rude manners both in and out of the stable! Any sugguestions on how to prevent her being bargy and strong, and any ideas on what feed to give her, which will bulk her up yet not make her hyper?
Well for a first horse they sure picked a tough one. If you aren’t completely confident with her she will know. Some horses are just more aggressive at tea time, it doesn’t mean shes hungry or under weight. Only increase her feed if she looks underweight, dont just do it to satisfy her. Is she stabled or turned out? If she is stabled, she might be missing her “foraging” time, so she might be more hungry. But if she grazes all day and doesn’t look thin, she might just love her food.
Make sure she has been wormed recently because worms make horses eat more to replace what they take out. If she is lacking muscle rather than weight, proper work will help more than an increase in food, but you could add a weight building supplement to her feed.
If she stops behaving badly on voice commands, dont give her a feed until she does. She should be standing patiently. You need to be the boss of her. Keep her tied up while you get her feed.
