Tea ceremony – Is it a reasonable price?
I recently visited Shanghai and met a Chinese couple who spoke extremely good English. They invited me to go to a Chinese tea ceremony with them.
The tea shop charged each of us 450 yuan for 6 cups of different teas and snacks (mainly sun flower seeds).
A lady showed and explained how to prepare tea properly using different types of pots. It took about 2 hours to finish her presentation.
It seemed very expensive considering the Chinese general prices.
When I asked a hotel receptionist later he told me it was a reasonable price.
When I have afternoon tea at Brown’s Hotel in London it was 25 pounds which was much cheaper. The Chinese tea shop was very ordinary and nothing special in interior although each tea was extremely fragrant.
Is the Chinese tea ceremony supposed to be expensive?
Luckily I only paid for myself.
If it was a scam does it mean the receptionist at 5 star hotel told me a lie, too?
Sorry the Tea ceremony is one of Chinas oldest cons, luckily at 450 rmb you got off likely.
The only way it would cost that much if it was “world” class tea but that is very much not be the case.

When ever a person in China asks me to goto tea I always waste their time.

Yes the odds are she was and she didn’t want you to think that Chinese people were cheaters. My flatmate hated going shopping with me because the owners would 7/10 times moan at her for not letting him/her cheat me. I even had one store owner started calling her names because of this.
