Shampoo Tea Tree

Is it true that tea tree shampoo should not be used that often?
I was using it as it is all natural and not tested on animals but someone told me that it should be used in moderation as it can be bad for the scalp. Not sure about this?
I use drops of tea tree oil in tons of things.
Home made cleaning products
Recently, because sinus infection causing a sore throat I used just one drop in a cup for a gargle.
I only use pure tea tree oil and add it stuff.
