What is the English Tea Etiquette?
Tea cups have myriad benefits, both utilitarian and decorative. For instance, mini tea cups are used to create unique wedding candle favors? Depending on your theme, you can use “British” or oriental cups to create exquisite favors (the handles too can be decorated with bows, ribbons and cards). Speaking of their real utility, of drinking tea, the English have a proper etiquette associated with the ritual; and tea parties serve as the perfect way for teaching children good manners.
Tea Cups Parties and Etiquette
Here is a glimpse of the English tea etiquette:
* Holding the cup: The cup is held with the index finger inserted into the handle up to the first knuckle. It is secured by placing the thumb over the handle, and the middle finger below the handle. The ring and small fingers are drawn in towards the wrist. Drawn out ring and small fingers are considered arrogant and tacky.
* Gentle Stirring: Be sure to stir your beverage gently, without clinking the sides of the cup with your spoon (careful to and fro movements will do).
* Placing the Spoon: After stirring, the spoon must be placed at the right side of the saucer, at the back of the handle. Leaving the spoon in the cup is considered bad etiquette.
* Also, never drink your brew from the spoon.
At a tea party, elders can teach children the basics of table manners, such as where to place the fork, napkin and spoon; the right sitting posture, the use of words such as “please,” “thank you” and “excuse me,” discouraging them from speaking with a full mouth, and so on. You can also show:
* How to serve and pass and the food around;
*Importance of saying “No-Thank You” when you do not want the food offered.
* How to greet and thank the host for the meal.
With constant, gentle reminders children grasp these etiquettes rapidly. Be sure to complement them when they display good manners. To encourage them further, you can serve them in beautiful children’s cups and mugs.
