Tips For Making DIY Party Invitations

Party-givers have access to a tremendous selection of free invitations in this day and age. It seems like no matter what the occasion, there are free invitation template images you can download and print on your printer. As might be expected, there are many general invitation types, such as free anniversary invitations. But there’s also a huge selection of invitations you can get free for very specific party types. For instance, there are free circus party invitations and many others.

These invitations are relatively easy to produce if you have a word processing program, such as Open Office or MS Word; or a publishing program, like Microsoft Publisher. Simply paste the invitation image into the software, make it the size you want and print it out. As simple as that may be, however, there are some subtleties it pays to be aware of when making the invitations. The following advice will help you master those subtleties and make the most out of free invitation art:

  • If you’re using word processing software application, you can use tables or text boxes to get more than one invitation image on a page. This will save you both card stock and time. (You’ll probably find that using a table is the easier path to take. If you’re not proficient with tables or text boxes, read the help menu of your word processing software.) Be sure to butt at least one edge of the invitation art to the other, so you can eliminate one cut.
  • When you’re ready to cut the invitations, using a paper cutter is your best bet. If you don’t have one, you can pay someone to cut them at a print shop, copy center or office supply store that offers that service. If there aren’t any stores around you with a paper cutter, the next best method is to use a craft knife, ruler and cutting board. And if nothing else, you could use scissors. If you decide to go that route, make sure to draw faint pencil lines first, so you’ll see where to cut. If you can’t cut straight, you might try using patterned scissors to create a decorative edge that will hide flaws.
  • Once your invitations are cut, you might want to decorate them. You’ll find a vast array of suitable decorations at your neighborhood craft store. These include silk flowers, die cut paper embellishments, brads, rhinestones and many other surprising elements you may have never even seen before. Three-dimensional paint or glitter glue can also be used to make the invitations truly your own. Be careful with this, however, because less is truly more when using embellishments. Try using the glue or paint on just the highlights of the design. Make sure to have extra invitations printed, so you can feel free to experiment.

I hope these suggestions help you get the most out of any free printable invitations you plan to make. Have fun making them!
